Caroline Wozniacki will knock Kim Clijsters off the top of the WTA world rankings next week after reaching the semi-finals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. The 20-year-old in definitely a player on the up and it will become increasingly difficult for Clijsters to hold on to the number one spot.
World rankings are rather a result of doing well rather than the main focus for any player and Wozniacki told the press;
"I've said all along I wasn't sure about whether I could become number one this week, and that my focus really is not upon that. For the moment it's more important to concentrate on what I have to do and try to win the tournament. Of course it's nice to be back at number one. I gave Kim one week, so now I will probably have it for a few more weeks now."
In the semi-finals, Wozniacki will face sixth seed Jelena Jankovic, who won a titanic struggle with fourth seed Samantha Stosur on a final set tie-break, 6-3 5-7 7-6 (7/4). That kind of match can take it out of a player and given that Wozniacki was largely untroubled in winning her quarter final 6-2 6-4 against Israel’s Shahar Peer, she has to be a strong fancy to make the final.
16th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova faces Italy's Flavia Pennetta in the other semi-final.
