It was confirmed in the early hours of Saturday 7th May that Seve Ballesteros, the five times major champion had passed away after battling a brain tumour for the past two and a half years. He was diagnosed in October 2008 but had deteriorated significantly in recent days.
There is some poignancy in that The Spanish Open is currently taking place in Barcelona. This was the last competition Ballesteros won at a professional golfer.
Seve arrived on the scene in 1974 turning professional and finishing runner up in the Open to Jack Nicklaus in 1976. He won his first competition that year, the Dutch Open, and from then on, there was no stopping the Spanish master. He won a total of 50 competitions on the European Tour and nine on the PGA tour and then of course five majors. He won the Masters in 1980 and 1983, and the Open Championship three times in 1979, 1984 & 1988. When he won the Masters in 1980, he was the youngest player ever to do so, although this record has since been broken when Tiger Woods arrived.
He died peacefully at home surrounded by his family aged just 54.
