Stanislas Wawrinka booked his place in the Australian Open quarter-final after totally outplaying eighth seed Andy Roddick on Sunday.
The 19th seed served up no less than 24 aces on court to wrap up 4th round match 6-3 6-4 6-4 victory and now an all Swiss clash with Roger Federer awaits.
Wawrinka certainly played better tennis than his 19th seeding indicated he should and if he plays the same against Federer, then we are in for a real treat. Wawrinka told the press;
…
Third seed Novak Djokovic faces Nicolas Almagro in the fourth round and circumstance would appear to have played him an ace. Djokovic was handed a straightforward passage into the fourth round on Friday when Serbian Davis Cup team-mate Viktor Troicki defaulted after one set. It seems that a stomach muscle strain was to blame for the early exit and the trainer was on court after 5 games had been played and Djokovic said afterwards:
"It is the third round of a Grand Slam…
The ATP World Tour Finals at the London O2 Arena have certainly provided the fans with plenty of entertainment and Rafael Nadal’s epic 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 7-6 (8-6) semi-final victory over Andy Murray yesterday has to go down as the greatest match in the history of the tournament.
By Contrast, Roger Federer had it relatively easy against Novak Djokovic in their semi, winning 6-1, 6-4.
Sunday afternoon’s final is therefore made up of Nadal and Federer and no-one could…
Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal are set to clash in the first Semi-Final at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Saturday and unlike many sporting events this weekend, the weather is likely to have little impact.
Slightly bizarrely, Andy Murray was keen to play down his chance of beating Nadal after overcoming David Ferrer on Thursday, telling the press;
"I'll try to win but I'm not sure I've got a whole lot of chance if I play against him. He's obviously…
Rafael Nadal looks far from a solid favourite to me to win the ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena next week. Nadal has been off with tendonitis in his shoulder so could be marginally short of match fitness and the Spaniard does not seem especially confident of a better showing last year, where he suffered 3 straight sets defeats in conditions that really don’t play to his strengths.
"You're playing against the best players in the world in the most difficult…
The final of the Swiss Indoors at Basle could not be better poised, with home favourite Roger Federer due to take on the Serbian Novak Djokovic. Neither player has conceded a set en-route to the final and it is clear that both players are very comfortable on court. A year ago, the same two players contested the final and Djokovic won in 3-sets. Indeed, the Serb has won 6 of the last 13 clashes with Federer and the match is likely to be close. With this short format, a good start …
Andy Murray is one game away from victory in the Shanghai Masters but victory for the Scotsman will be well guarded by the mighty Roger Federer. In the semi-finals, Federer beat the tough Novak Djokovic (7-5 6-4 ) and on the whole played to a very high standard. Murray on the other hand, made fairly short work of beating the 41st ranked Argentinian Player, Juan Monaco, despite making a bit of a meal of the first set. After a bright start, Murray struggled mid-set but Monaco…
What a thrilling semi-final last night between Roger Federer on Novak Djokovic and having tipped the latter pre-tournament each-way, I am delighted with the result. Another massive hurdle stands between Djokovic and the crown though by name of Rafael Nadal. The world number one had a much easier passage through to the final, comfortably beating the Russian Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets. That could be a significant factor and the Spaniard could be the fresher of the two for…
Rafael Nadal has yet to win a US Open and the World number one will be fancying his chances of putting that right this year. A Federer / Nadal final looks on the cards and Nadal has to beat Mikhail Youzhny in order to secure his place. The Russian overcame Stanislas Wawrinka in the quarter-finals in 5-sets and is a strong player, ranked number 12.
The head-to-head score stands at 7-4 to Nadal, although the Spaniard did lose their quarter-final clash at Flushing Meadows in…
Novak Djokovic carried my pre-tournament vote to make the final and today we will find out if that is going to be the case. Djokovic is a consistent player but the last 3-years have seen a similar exit for the Slovakian, going down to the great Roger Federer each time. Is there cause to expect any different this year? There isn’t really I guess; both players breezed through their quarter finals with relative ease and neither has had an especially taxing tournament thus…
Caroline Wozniacki has notably not dropped a set in the US Open thus far and she looks a solid bet to get past Vera Zvonareva in the opening women’s semi final at Flushing Meadow. The Russian has reached her first semi-final this year and is a top 10 player but she really struggled to get through her quarter final and it is hard to think she is going to be up to beating the Dane, who is in tremendous form.
Vera believes that people are underestimating Wozniacki,…
It is hard to believe that Venus Williams is now 30 but the world number 4 remains a formidable player at the highest level. In reaching the semi-final against Kim Clijsters, she made fairly hard work of despatching French Open champion and world number 4, Francesca Schiavone. Although the wind was blamed in part, Venus served 9 double faults and made 33 unforced errors in the QF, stats which on the face of it cannot be repeated if she is to beat Kim Clijsters this evening…
Paul-Henri Mathieu may have knocked out Lleyton Hewitt in the opening round of the US Open but he is more a doubles player and a thumping defeat looks in store at the hands of Roger Federer when the pair clash this evening (19.00 GMT). Federer will be keen to get things over and done without a struggle and although odds of 1/33 are not appealing, Paddy Power are out on a limb though by offering 1/3 against a 3 sets to love victory and that is probably a shade too big.
Victor Chandler have seemingly taken a real view on the chances of Robin Soderling in his match against Thiemo De Bakker as they are offering 2/7 when other firms are as low as 1/7. That looks too good to miss so whilst it lasts, it is worth taking. His opponent can be backed at 4/1 elswhere, giving an under-round book.
Hurricane Earl permitting, British hope Andy Murray will be looking to progress into the third round of the US Open at Flushing Meadow this evening (GMT) and according to the bookies, he cannot lose. William Hill stand out at 1/50, with Victor Chandler offering 1/200 and those kind of prices hold no appeal whatsoever. At the same time, a top priced 25/1 about his opponent Dustin Brown, currently ranked 123 doesn’t set the heart racing either. Asked about his opponent…
The 2010 US Open at Flushing Meadow promises to be up to the usual standard and the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and of course Andy Murray are strongly fancied to do well. Andy Murray has a predictably big fan base over in the UK but to be honest, his appeal as a betting medium is limited and he is generally poor value. With the draw having been made, that opinion has been hardened to my mind as the Scot will possibly have to defeat both Tomas Berdych and Rafael Nadal…
The Quarter Finals of the ATP Cincinnati Masters have not gone the way that one would have expected at all, with Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray all suffering defeats. That leaves Roger Federer as the odds-on favourite for the tournament but it might be worth taking an interest in the semi-finals first.
British hopeful Andy Murray was out-battled in the heat by Mardy Fish in a match where the notable heat worked against the Scottish player. The World number four…
The sea has parted for ROGER FEDERER, with Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray all getting knocked out in the Quarter Finals leaving Andy Roddick as number one challenger. Unseeded Marcos Baghdatis pulled off the biggest shock in defeating a below-par Nadal 6-4 4-6 6-4. The Spaniard, whilst being a fantastic player, is always a little vulnerable to the serve and not only did his rival take advantage of Nadal’s relatively quiet serve, he also fired 18-aces past…
Misfortune can strike us all and it certainly has struck Serena Williams, who bizarrely has reportedly cut her foot on broken glass in a restaurant. The injury isn’t too serious although neither is it just a minor cut it would seem as an operation was necessary, rendering the World number one doubtful for the next three tournaments prior to the US Open. Serena, who recently retained her Wimbledon crown may miss a trio of hardcourt events in Istanbul, Cincinnati and…
In hindsight, the misguided faith in England’s football team carried over to Andy Murray on Friday as despite having a huge serve advantage, he failed to even get competitive against a rampant RAFAEL NADAL. Is the Spaniard going to fall at the final hurdle against a talented player but one relatively unknown on the back pages, Tomas Berdych? I think probably not.
Nadal has a 7-3 record against Berdych, and he’s won the last six times they’ve played.…
