SHARP SHOES looks a decent bet to land some shopping money in the 5f handicap at Southwell on Thursday (12.30). A winner of 5-races, the 4-y-o has had just 3 runs here on this surface, a trio of consecutive runs at the turn of the year yielding form figures of 245. 7 lb lower now but has been second in two of his last six so not exactly out of form. Dropping in grade today and running off his lowest mark this year, he makes plenty of appeal at a double-figure price.
Half an hour later, the second division looks a bit more tricky. A tentative vote is given to TANCRED SPIRIT on account of his price. Paul Midgely has a decent course record and this 3-y-o has a handful of second places to his name. Races prominently and visored which ought to suit here and the 120-day break doesn’t unduly trouble me.
At 2.30, I am inclined to think HUZZAH is over-priced at 28/1. Once upon a time, this one was running a full 2 ½ stone above today’s mark but it has been a prolonged fall from grace in recent seasons. Still, he can blast out and make the running so just maybe this new surface will suit him if allowed his head in front, especially as he is more often seen running over a mile.
