Portugal look outstanding value to top 2014 Group F

Although Portugal look unlikely winners of the 2014 World Cup they do seem rather generous odds with Coral bookmakers to top their qualifying group with Russia appearing their only realistic opposition in a group that also includes Israel, Northern Ireland, Azerbaijan and Luxembourg.

Many people were disappointed with the performance of the Portuguese during the 2010 World Cup, yet they still managed draws against the Ivory Coast and Brazil before losing by a single goal to eventual winners Spain.

Now under the guidance of Paulo Bento, after ex-Manchester United assistant Carlos Queiroz's stint in charge proved less than successful, results have begun to take a turn for the better, with a 4-0 friendly defeat of Spain the highlight.

Real Madrid trio Pepe, Carvalho and Coentrao form the basis of a solid defence, while their team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo can win any game almost single handedly, add to those the ever-improving Nani of Manchester United and you can see why the 1.80 on offer from Coral looks great value.

Russia are currently locked in a three-way battle with Slovakia and the Republic of Ireland to qualify for Euro 2012 and with the likes of Roman Pavluchenko and Andrei Arshavin among their ranks will certainly prove no pushovers, but in our opinion Portugal look solid bet material at only a shade of odds-on in a group that looks a two runner affair.

Recommendation: Back Portugal at 1.80 with Coral
