On an exciting final day at Gleneagles, Italy’s Edoardo Molinari produced the goods that not only landed him the Johnnie Walker Championship, but also one of Colin Montgomerie’s wildcard picks for the 2010 Ryder Cup.
With three holes to play the gritty Italian needed to birdie them all to take the title and did so in a style that made it impossible for ‘Captain Monty’ to rule him out of a trip to Wales in October. This was his second title of the season and on both occasions he was paired with his brother in the final two-ball.
Edoardo and Francesco, who had already qualified for the team, clearly enjoy playing with each other, as they showed when landing the 2009 World Cup and look nailed on to pair up for Europe in both the foursomes and four-balls.
With this in mind the 5/1 that William Hill have on offer for Edoardo to be 'Top European Rookie' would appeal as a value bet. In a field of six runners Peter Hanson looks outclassed and Ross Fisher may not play in all the fourballs/foursomes matches. Martin Kaymer and Rory McIlroy are obvious dangers, but at the odds I'll take the Italian to finish off his year in style.
