Majestic marksman Mario Gomez can continue fine form against Mainz on Sunday

Mainz made a cracking start to their Bundesliga campaign last season, heading the table for many weeks, but they’ve found the going much tougher this time around, and while Bayern Munich were turned over in their latest domestic match at home to reigning champions Borussia Dortmund last weekend, Jupp Heynckes’ men should prove too strong for Mainz at the Coface Arena on Sunday.

Die Roten bounced back from the defeat on home soil against Dortmund by brushing aside Villarreal in their Champions League match during the week, and remain in very strong position in the German top-flight, just a point off top spot, with a game in hand of current pace-setters Borussia Monchengladbach. With the latter side facing third-placed Dortmund next weekend, a victory in this fixture will put Bayern in an even stronger position.

Mainz have won three of their last five fixtures, but the two they’ve lost have been at home. Moreover, their overall record this term doesn’t read well and I’m not surprised that the Bavarians are as short as 1.40 despite being away from home. They are looking very solid both defensively and offensively during the current campaign, and Franck Ribery underlined his current wellbeing with a brace against Villarreal.

Bayern’s Mario Gomez has picked up where he left off last season, and has averaged a goal a game in the league this term, currently heading the goal-scoring charts with 13 on the board, and the German international will terrorise the hosts’ leaky defence this weekend. Unoriginal advice though it may be, I’m recommending backing the imposing hitman in the first goalscorer market at a standout 3.75 with Betfred.

Recommendation: Mario Gomez in the first goalscorer market
