With Gordon Brown announcing that he wants to spend more time with his family and resigning as leader of the Labour Party the search is on for a new leader to keep the red flag flying.
First to throw his hat into the ring was former foreign secretary David Milliband seen as a Blarite he looks to be favoured by the majority of his parliamentary colleagues. How much support from the powerful unions who bankroll the Labour Party is less clear and this could scupper his ambitions.
He has been somewhat surprisingly joined in the race by his brother Ed Milliband the former Secretary Of State for Energy and Climate Change. It is possible that he could split the “Milliband Vote”.
The brother’s main rival for Labour Party Leader seems to be bruiser Ed Balls who is married to fellow MP Yvette Cooper and they would make a formidable couple were they ever to ultimately make it to Number 10. Mr Balls was a strong supporter of Gordon Brown and urged him to stay at the helm of the party.
Other contenders looking to get the top Labour Party job are rising star Andy Burnham, outsider John Cruddas who has strong grassroots support and the current in situ leader Harriett Harman. Their Labour Party Leader Odds are value in the betting market.
It is par for the course for there to be blood on the carpet when Labour chooses a new leader, we expect it will be a no holds barred leadership contest.
