The Congressional Country Club in Maryland is the setting for the 2011 U.S. Open Golf Championship and I expect Hunter Mahan to finally land his first major title, at the age of 29, on a course that looks tailor-made for his game.
The U.S. Open is usually won with a score of around level par or worse and favours a golfer that can plot his way around a golf course, which is definitely a trait you would level at Hunter Mahan.
Despite a rare missed cut in this event last year his record in this particular major bares the closest scrutiny. Between the years of 2007 and 2009 his finishing positions were 13th, 18th and 6th, clearly showing his liking for this type of grinding golf.
The man from California has won three times on tour with one of those victories coming in the 2010 World Golf Championship at Bridgestone, proving he can win against the highest quality opposition.
He currently ranks 40th on tour for driving accuracy and 5th for greens in regulation, two statistics that should stand him in good stead when the seasons second major gets under way on Thursday 16th June.
So we know he has the ideal game for this test and we know he can win at the highest level, but what about his form this season? Well Hunter Mahan has played in fourteen events on the U.S. Tour in 2011 and has finished inside the top ten in half of them, which really is a tremendous effort.
So my suggestion would be to take the 29.00 on offer with Bet 365 and with five places on offer you're more than likely to get a very good run for your money.
