Racing Tips: Tartan Gigha worth waiting for at Leicester

Published on 10/10/2011 22:29

The final race of Tuesday (Leicester 5.40) can go to Mark Johnston's runner TARTAN GIGHA. It is fair to say that the 6-y-o has rather lost his way this season, having run well in the spring but that has resulted in him dropping to his lowest ever mark of 75. On his best form, he has not pounds in hand but stones and this triple class 2 winner finds himself down to class 5. A leap of faith is needed I grant you but the price is simply too tempting not to take. Obsession is a…

First-time blinkers can enable Inler to eclipse at Ecliptic at Salisbury

Published on 10/10/2011 09:14

The boys in blue of Godolphin have three runners in the main race of the day at Salisbury this afternoon, the Bathwick Tyres Free Admission Raceday Conditions Stakes (4.30), the pick of which judged on jockey bookings is Ecliptic. The son of Kingmambo looked pretty useful as a juvenile, but hasn’t been seen out since last July when a creditable neck second to King Torus in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket. For all his undoubted potential Ecliptic does not…

Goodwood Sunday – Horseracing Tips. Sutton Veney gets another chance for Jeremy Gask

Published on 09/10/2011 09:47

Whilst Jeremy Gask has enjoyed an improved season, there is one stable mate who must be frustrating both the trainer and the syndicate that own her. Grey Mare SUTTON VENEY has seen her mark rise from 70 to today's level of 88 without winning on turf! She runs in the Goodwood Aero Club Handicap at 2.35pm This season she has improved even further than she did over the winter on the all weather, but in turn, without winning a race her mark, which started at 83 in May this…

Parisian Pyramid and Lutine Bell value tips at York

Published on 08/10/2011 10:25

A decent sprint handicap to get stuck into at York (4.05) fresh from sorting through the Cesarewitch field and there are a couple that can be fancied at decent prices. PARISIAN PYRAMID has seemingly dropped out of form since an excellent second here in early September but that may not actually be the case. A bad run in the Ayr Gold Cup could fairly be attributed to the soft ground and then the grey 5-y-o got upset in the stalls at Ascot before weakening over 7f. This is his trip …

Mystery Star & Sentry Duty pick of Cesarewitch field at Newmarket

Published on 07/10/2011 22:35

The Betfred Cesarewitch (Newmarket 3.50) is one of the great betting races on the calendar. A staying handicap over a marathon 2m 2f, the races famously finishes in a different county to that in which it starts. The 10-year stats for this race are quite interesting; the age range being from 3-11 but more interesting is the effect of the draw. Horses drawn in the lowest 12 stalls have a massive edge it seems and that is hardly surprising given that there are 36 runners and there…

Ramp it up with 12-1 shot Riggins in competitive York handicap on Friday

Published on 06/10/2011 21:39

The feature race on the Flat in Britain on Friday is the Acorn Web Offset Stakes, a highly competitive handicap with 19 runners set to go to post, with most bookmakers going 8-1 the field. Circumventhas to be high on any list, having returned to winning ways at Goodwood last month and followed that up with a cracking effort in defeat in the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket where he came home in sixth place, finishing just three lengths adrift of winner Prince of Johanne. With…

Soft Ground at Ayr will suit TAMANACO – No win for Hanagan here

Published on 06/10/2011 06:09

Paul Hanagan supporters and the jockey himself will be hoping to land this 4.10 Laser Life Handicap at Ayr this afternoon but Graham Gibbons and TAMANACO could be the one to scoop the spoils and pause the challenge title for the leading jockey. Hanagan rides Gala Casino Star for Richard Fahey. He won over this trip at Haydock in June from a mark of 74 and in three subsequent runs under a penalty has not really shown the same form, he has been eased back to 74 now and has shown …

Halucha set to climb the Towcester hill in front

Published on 05/10/2011 10:58

2.00 Nottingham - The first race of the afternoon can go to CHORISTER GIRL. William Jarvis' filly went off quite well fancied for her debut in a fair race back in May and then led the field for a good way upped to 6f a couple of weeks later before weakening out of things. Rested since July where she was disappointing sent North but I suspect she has more to offer. The break she is returning from should be viewed as a positive and she could be both well treated and well drawn …

Quiz Mistress can leave rivals guessing at Leicester this afternoon

Published on 04/10/2011 08:10

I’m aware that many people habitually back the outsider in four-runner races, and while I wouldn’t subscribe to the view that that modus operandi should be applied blindly, I certainly believe that QUIZ MISTRESS can prevail in the Quorn Handicap at Leicester (4.10) this afternoon, despite being the least fancied of the quartet in the betting. Looking at the race laterally, Franciscan looks to me as though he could be in the handicapper’s grip now, Hot…

Tullius can Take the Race at Pontefract – Monday Horse Racing Tip

Published on 03/10/2011 07:18

Peter Winkworth runs his TULLIUS in the richest race of the day which takes place at 3.10 Pontefract. The David Brotherton Stewarding Handicap has attracted a field of eight runner to take on the one mile trip here. Previously running well over course and distance TULLIUS finished runner up here last month on his penultimate outing before finding better company too tough at Thirsk last time out. A return to this track and this company with a 2lb drop in the weights still…

Arc Sunday but the best bet Mumbles Pier runs at Huntingdon

Published on 01/10/2011 23:25

The Arc may be the big race of the day on Sunday but I think there is a better punting opportunity at lowly Huntingdon in the handicap hurdle at 4.50. MUMBLES PIER did not justify my support at Newton Abbot 12-days ago but he ran well to a point off a break and today he is down in class and down in the weights. Connections reach for the visor and he may just be the type to be improved by such a tactic. Additionally, Jamie Moore is not riding Herschel for father Gary but is…

Flat Out and Stay Thirsty lock horns in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park

Published on 30/09/2011 16:02

For US racing aficionados there’s a cracking card at Belmont Park on Saturday – dubbed ‘Super Saturday’ with $2.65million in prize-money up for grabs across the six graded races – and one of the key races is the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes at 10.46 UK time. This prestigious Grade 1 event is invariably used a stepping stone towards the Breeders’ Cup Classic a month hence, and the favourite for that race, Stay Thirsty, puts his reputation on…

Kieren Fallon can swoop on Hawkeyethenoo in valuable Ascot handicap on Saturday

Published on 30/09/2011 16:01

HAWKEYETHENOO can resume winning ways in the valuable totesccop6 Challenge Cup at Ascot (3.50) on Saturday, and the 10-1 currently on offer about Jim Goldie’s charge should be snapped up. I was really impressed with the five-year-old when he landed the Victoria Cup over this C&D in May, beating the re-opposing duo Manassas and Nasri – and 25 others – with plenty left up his sleeve. The handicapper banged him up 8lb for that, but I don’t believe…

Franny Norton recieves a 40 day ban from Race Riding – Friday Horse Racing Tip

Published on 30/09/2011 07:38

Liverpool based flat Jockey Franny Norton has been handed a 40 day ban from riding following a hearing with the British Horseracing Authority Disciplinary Panel on Thursday. Norton was answering to his breath test charge from Chester on 5th May when he was found to have been in breach of Rule (D)66 and the “Upper Level” of Alcohol in his system. He will be sidelined from 7th October through to 23rtd November. He is due to ride at Wolverhampton tonight. Whist that …

Racing Tips: New Leyf to take final race of the day

Published on 29/09/2011 13:19

LEADENHALL LASS is a fast ground specialist and that is what might be needed over the next few days. Not over-raced, the 5-y-o mare has proved up to running to 73 or more a number of times and so off 62 today, she has to be interesting. She flew home at Sandown last time over 5f but also stays 7f so this 6f trip coupled with a drop in grade bode well for her chances of winning the Warwick 2.10 Sticking with the girls, at Wolverhampton 20 minutes later DIAMOND RUN can…

Gusto can blow rivals away at Salisbury on Wednesday

Published on 27/09/2011 20:34

The pick of Wednesday’s racing action is the Veronica Stewart Memorial Conditions Stakes, a Class 2 event for juveniles at Salisbury (3.35), and while Godolphin’s Ihsas is bound to be popular following her debut victory on the AW at Lingfield earlier this month, at around the 7-2 mark GUSTO is the one to be on. I was a shade disappointed with Richard Hannon’s charge in a Listed race at Ripon last month when, having attracted plenty of support, he could finish …

Fallon the man for REDAIR at Chepstow – Tuesday Horseracing Tips & Odds

Published on 26/09/2011 22:04

The most expensive race of the day comes up at Ayr where Jeremy Nosedas DARE TO DANCE looks set to take the Daily Record Class 3 Handicap at 4.40. The odds look prohibitive with an overnight odds on price showing on Betfair, so whilst that looks a winner in waiting, Valuechecker goes checking for value elsewhere. In doing so we have come across Kieren Fallon being booked by David Evans to ride REDAIR in the 2.00 Western Daily Press Handicap over 6f. Catherine Gannon has…

Fallon to win Ffos Las finale on Qaraqum

Published on 25/09/2011 22:39

Fifteen are due to go to post in the Crabbie’s Alcoholic Ginger Beer Handicap (4.50 Ffos Las) but the race does not look as competitive as the number of entries implies. John Spearing has hit form and his mare Croeso Mawr must have very strong claims if able to repeat her latest run, where she appeared to show marked improvement. I am slightly favouring another filly though in QARAQUM. Dennis Coakley has secured the services of Kieren Fallon for this lightly-raced 4-y-o…

Sure Route solid value alternative to Dubawi Sound in Epsom handicap

Published on 25/09/2011 13:07

The unexposed Dubawi Sound will doubtless be popular in the toteexacta Handicap at Epsom this afternoon, but I’m a tad concerned that the colt has been absent since making a winning debut in a 1m Newbury maiden in April and, despite the Roger Varian yard going good guns at present, my advice is to take Dubawi Sound on, especially with him priced up at around the 11-10 mark at the time of writing. There was plenty to like about Dubawi Sound’s victory at that…

Juddmonte Beresford Stakes Preview: Can Akeed Mofeed be opposed at The Curragh?

Published on 25/09/2011 12:53

Akeed Mofeed was impressive when slamming Athens by five lengths in a 7f Leopardstown maiden earlier this month and the latter, who re-opposes here, subsequently scored at Listowel, giving that form a timely boost. There’s no doubt that John Oxx’s charge is a smart prospect, but I couldn’t be backing him at odds-on in this afternoon’s Juddmonte Beresford Stakes given that he faces rivals with proven Group-class form. With just seven going to post,…
