As Saturday and the Grand National draws nearer, so does the possibility of a historic result should Dont Push It and Tony McCoy win the race for the second successive season. Not Since Red Rum and Brian Fletcher in 1973/74 has the feat been achieved.
Also of note is how this prize has been spread out between jockeys over the years. Since those back to back wins for Ginger Macain and his legendary Red Rum, he won the race for a third time in 1977 with Tommy Stack in the saddle that time, only Richard Dunwoody (1986 West Tip and 1994 Minnehoma) and Carl Llewellyn (1992 Party Politics and1998 Earth Summit) have each won the race as jockeys more than once.
Only three trainers have won the race more than once since 1974 too. Tim Forster (1980 & 1985), Jenny Pitman (1983, 1995) and Nigel Twiston-Davies (1998 & 2002). Ginger McCain romantically won the race one final time in 2004 with Amberliegh House.
DONT PUSH IT is a best priced 14/1 to win the race this year but will have to do so from top weight and 11 stone 10lbs. Ironically no horse since Red Rum has won with that amout of weight!
