The only slight surprise to come from Corey Pavin’s wildcard picks was the inclusion of young Ricky Fowler who joins the more obvious choices of Tiger Woods, Zach Johnson and Stewart Cink to do battle with Europe at Celtic Manor next month.
Fowler, at just 21 years of age, will be playing in the Ryder Cup just one year after representing his country in the Walker Cup and despite three second places has yet to win an event on the US tour.
Tiger Woods improved form over the last few weeks made it impossible for Corey Pavin to leave him out and although his previous Ryder Cup record doesn’t match his individual one, he does look like a player peaking at just the right time.
Several bookmakers have opened a book on who will be the American’s Top Wildcard pick and William Hill’s offer of 10/11 for Tiger to finish the year with a bang makes plenty of appeal.
Zach Johnson and Stuart Cink are both Major winners and won’t be fazed by the atmosphere that this clash inevitably brings with it, but how many games will they play compared to the World’s number one golfer?
Tiger is more than likely to play in all five matches, where as Stuart Cink and Zach Johnson may play in around three, with Rickie Fowler perhaps only getting out on the course once before the singles.
It’s not often you can get a decent price on Tiger Woods starting off on a level playing field, but with an advantage this does look a price worth taking and with the prospect of a Tiger win looming large in the FedEx Cup the odds could detract very soon.
