The US Masters gets under way on Thursday 8th April and all eyes will be on Tiger Woods as he makes his return to competitive golf after almost five months absence. Quite how he’ll perform is anybody’s guess, but it’s my opinion that he’ll struggle badly and before I touch on my outright selections I must point you in the direction of a bet well worth a second look.
Tiger is used to being hounded by the worlds media, but that is usually in a positive sense not with the amount of negativity that will be evident here. They will without doubt try to ask personal questions that he has so far avoided and that allied to the fact that he can’t possibly have his game in top shape leads me to think it will all prove too much, even for the great Tiger Woods.
William Hill are offering 9/4 that he fails to make the top ten and that looks a standout bet to me, with Tiger for once failing in the birdie department!
So if not Tiger then who will walk away wearing the famous green jacket? Well Ernie Els may have just peaked too early after winning twice recently and Phil Mickelson was all over the place at the Arnold Palmer Invitational recently.
It may well take a superhero performance to win this seasons first major, so who better to side with than ‘Spiderman’ himself, Camillo Villegas. Third place in the Accenture World Match Play was followed by a win at the Honda Classic and the man from Colombia looks ready to take the next step forward in his career and land his first major prize.
No doubt his confidence will be boosted by a thirteenth place finish in this event last year and at odds of around the 33/1 mark this talented twenty-eight year old must be supported each way.
Another man that usually rises to the big occasion is American Hunter Mahan. He finished no lower than sixteenth in all three majors played in the states last year and has already managed to find the winners enclosure this season. At odds of 50/1 you are almost guaranteed a run for your money backing the gritty Californian.
Nick Watney is a player that has really progressed over the last year or two and could also be about to make the transition from tour player to major winner. The man from Sacramento can already boast of three top-ten finishes this year and has finished 11th and 19th in his only two visits to Augusta.
Now under the guidance of Tiger Woods’ old coach Butch Harmon big things are expected and a small investment at a general 50/1 is recommended.
Finally a word for South Korea’s K.J. Choi, who is playing some of the best golf of his career at the moment. He has twice filled the runner-up spot this year and although a long time ago he did finish 3rd at the 2003 Masters, so has previous course form.
At odds of 66/1 it would be silly to leave him out of our staking plan in a week where so many will fancy there chances of grabbing the limelight from a certain Eldrick ‘Tiger’ Woods.
